APPEAL – JOCKEY DANIEL THOMPSON vs. STEWARDS' DECISION

On Thursday 19 th May, 2022, the Jamaica Racing Commission heard an appeal
submitted by Jockey Daniel Thompson against the Stewards’ decision which was
handed down on Tuesday, 12 th January, 2021 concerning his suspension period of
Twenty-Five (25) race days, no use of whip for Ten (10) successive rides, and a fine of
Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000.00). This decision was made in regards to the
improper use of whip by Jockey Daniel Thompson who was seen striking his horse
RHEA’S LIL BRO twice on the head and neck postrace on January 1, 2021.
After carefully reviewing the film of the race and submissions made by
Mr. Edward Barnes, representative to Mr. Daniel Thompson, and the Jamaica Racing
Commission’s Operations Steward, the Commission ruled as follows:-
? The Commission overturned the decision of the Stewards to impose a fine amount
of Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20, 000.00).
? The Commission further ruled that the suspension period of twenty-five (25) race
days as given by the Stewards be served as follows :-
? A total of four (4) race days suspension be served commencing on May 28,
2022 and the remaining twenty-one (21) race days be suspended for a period
of six (6) months.
? Following his resumption of racing, Jockey Thompson will not be allowed the
use of his whip for a total of five (5) successive rides
? They also recommended that further counselling be sought from Father Collier by
Jockey Thompson for his anger management .
